Wyman-Gordon is a leading producer of highly engineered technologically advanced components for use in the aerospace, defence, land based power generation and automotive markets. The company uses open die press and closed die forging to produce metal components of varying weights and sizes for technically demanding applications. Key areas on site includes the forge (800 Kj and 400Kj counter blow hammers and a 630 tonne open die press), die, saw and machine shop, heat treatment, lab, etch and die line and process simulation modelling capability.
In 1842 Nathaniel Clayton and Joseph Shuttleworth formed Clayton Shuttleworth Ltd. They produced agricultural equipment specialising in threshing machines.
In 1963 Smith Clayton Forge Ltd were taken over by Guest Keen and Nettleford (GKN) along with several other major independent companies and became part of the GKN Forgings and Castings Group. Later the GKN Forgings Group was amalgamated with the British Steel Special Steels Division to form an organisation known as United Engineering and Forging.
By 1997 the British Steel Forgings group had been taken over by an organisation lead by the Prudential Venture Managers. The company was renamed UEF Aerospace and UEF Automotive, Lincoln. UEF standing for United Engineering Forgings.
